Cast Iron Fireback

Cast Iron Fireback

A wonderful cast iron fireback dated 1736. Their function was to hold and release the heat from the fire back to the room. There is a great history behind the symbology of firebacks. In this case we have a simple design with moulding all around the piece and the Pillars of Hercules upstraight on the side and crossed to the centre. This design commenced to appear on firebacks in the XVII century, symbolysing strenght and power as well as  the narrow border between know and unknown, safety and danger, life and death. Salvaged in Italy, XVIII century.
