Easter Diorama
Easter Diorama
€1.600,00
A rare Easter diorama that depicts the scene of the Anointing of the body of Christ laying on a stone just before being brought to the tomb.
Nativities, especially in Southern Italy, were not only made during Christmas time. While the classic nativities announced the birth of Jesus, the Eastern ones – also known as the nativities of the Passion- narrated the last moments of Jesus’s life. These nativities would normally be illustrated in the shape of dioramas, namely small scale reproductions and scenes with different figures and elements and a background. In this case there is a cartapesta ( papier maché) Christ at the centre of the scene with the Calvary- the hill just outside Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified- in the background, .
These Easter dioramas were popular in the XVIII and XIX centuries and were then completely forgotten. The diorama in matter probably dates back to the early XIX century and was built with wood and papier maché. It has very bright and joyful colours and detailed decorations such as the Corinthian columns, the putti and the Baroque ornaments. Unfortunately two of the putti are missing as well as the cross that was probably on the top of the cupola. During the restoration we decided not to add the missing parts to respect the history of the piece. Italy, XIX century.
