Middle Eastern Dowry Chest

Middle Eastern Dowry Chest

One of those pieces you would never want to separate from and that makes our work so beautiful. Definetly one of the pieces we are proud the most.

This imposing dowry chest was made in the Middle Eastern area. Its uniqueness doesn’t depend solely on its size, arched top and rich decorations. What makes this trunk one of a kind it’s the bicoloured blue textile that envelops it. This feature is a rarity when it comes to dowry chests and furniture in general. In the inside there are some layers of decorative paper which have surely been applied later. We have decided to keep it there to respect the history of the piece and the people who owned it before us.

For centuries, especially in the Middle Eastern region, these chests were used to transport clothes, textiles, jewelry and other valuable items. The chests were decorated as richly as means would allow to show off the status symbol of the family when the bride arrived at her new home. In the Middle Eastern houses chests such as this one were placed in the woman’s area where it could quietly continue to announce its status and serve as an item of practical furniture.

The most richly decorated pieces were mariage chests, particularly those decorated with good luck symbols and signs of red paint—the color of love, passion and fertility. It is very difficult to establish the exact provenance of these Middle Eastern dowry chests since very little appears to have written and documented before the arrival of Europeans.
