Rationalist Floor Lamp

Rationalist Floor Lamp

An elegant brass floor lamp from the 50’s with the typical linear and essential forms of 1920/30′ Italian design. The lamp consists of two tubular structures which allow to adjust the height and a curvilinear arm that serves to move the point of light where needed. Despite the fact that it was manufactured almost 70 years ago, this light is surprisingly modern and ideal to decorate any kind of space.

In Italy, during the 20’s, the rationalist current spread rapidly in architecture. This new movement refused art intended as an accumulation of historicized knowledge and wanted to repleace it with the belief that the new modern society, striving for progress, must find its artistic identity in a rigorous coherence between form and function, between creative act and industrial logic. In this way, the architect (as well as the artist and the designer) is no longer seen exclusively as a technician but rather as one who is able to indicate a new and comfortable lifestyle.

The architectural rationalism gave a great boost to Italian design. In fact, during these years, furniture and decorative objects were no longer designed prioritizing their functionality. Rationalists’s main aim was to design and create practical furniture using the reason, in an attempt to free humanity from fatigue.
